Pride and Politics

We are very pleased that over the past few months, we have managed to build a Pride Club. We offer support to LGBT+ students and their friends, and provide a safe space for these students to come and discuss all things Pride. Before the Christmas holiday, we were discussing the issues around homophobia and transphobia in Qatar in the lead up to the World Cup. This resulted in us looking at the news and what our Government were doing to help and support LGBT+ fans who were travelling to Qatar. One of the articles featured local MP Luke Pollard standing up in Parliament, talking openly about being gay and his feelings around Qatar and the World Cup. We approached Luke and asked if he was willing to come in and meet with our Pride Club to have a conversation around Pride and how his role as an MP gives him a platform to fight for gay and trans rights. All students in KS3 have studied democracy and the Government this academic year so it was the perfect opportunity for our Pride Club to use their knowledge in a real conversation.

Luke discussed how he is very actively involved in the promotion of gay and trans rights in Parliament, and how he managed homophobia from constituents. The students asked some wonderful questions and really engaged in their conversations.

We are currently working towards the Rainbow Flag Award to show we are a fully inclusive school, who supports all of our students who identify as LGBT+. If there is anything that you as a Parent/Carer are able to offer, or if you need some support with anything LGBT+, please feel free to get in touch.
