Learn2Live Road Safety Event

On Wednesday 7th December our Year 12 Sixth Form students attended a road safety event presented by Learn2Live at Plymouth Guildhall. Road safety is a vital area of education, and the event was aimed specifically at those who are likely to be learning to drive or taking lifts with peers who are newly qualified.

In the United Kingdom young people between 17 - 24 years of age are over-represented in road traffic collisions that result in fatalities and serious injuries. The Learn2Live road safety event educated our Sixth Form students about the ways they can keep themselves and others safe on the roads.

The students watched videos of young people enacting positive and safe scenarios thereby avoiding risky situations on the roads. Students heard from specialists from the police, fire service and ambulance trusts about the realities of what the risks are for young drivers and their passengers, what the consequences of those risks can be, and how to realistically avoid them happening. They also heard from members of the public who have personal experience of road traffic collisions. The main themes covered were speed, fatigue, inexperience and in car distractions, as these are proven areas of highest risk for this age group.

By attending the road safety event our students increased their knowledge about the risk’s young drivers in particular face, why this is so and what actions they can do to create their own safe plan to keep themselves safe. The event also increased the belief that the students and their peers are willing and able to speak up, and challenge negative peer pressure in a vehicle developing an intention and willingness to do so.

Overall, the event empowered our students with the knowledge and tools required to stay safe on the roads.
