Johnny Mercer Visit

We were delighted that on 25th November Johnny Mercer, our elected member of Parliament for Moor View was able to join us at College. Johnny has been in Government for a number of years and now sits within the cabinet.

Over recent weeks our students have been learning about parliament and the rule of law in their Personal Development lessons. Johnny’s visit was an excellent opportunity to hear what it is really like in parliament (apparently it is much smaller than it looks on TV)! Johnny was very open and honest with our students and although he didn’t give political opinion, he was able to provide insight into how Government works. He answered some pertinent questions on issues raised by our students, such as freedom of speech and gender inequality. Students also asked his personal preferences around cultural issues important to them: football in Qatar (and his thought on England’s chances of winning); favourite takeaway meal and what he does in his spare time.

Johnny was able to give words of wisdom to our students about working hard and aiming high and shared with them how he had been able to gain his current role representing Plymouth in Parliament. We are very grateful that he was able to find time in his busy schedule to come and visit us and we hope to welcome him back in the near future.
