Emotional wellbeing and mental health problems affect about one in 10 children and young people. They include depression, anxiety and stress, and are often a direct response to what is happening in their lives.
We describe well being as the state of being comfortable, healthy or happy.
At SJH, we aim to promote positive physical, mental and social health for every member of our school community. Prioritising the wellbeing of students and staff ensures that outstanding teaching and learning can take place, and that the school is a community where everyone feels able to thrive. The wellbeing of our students and staff is always at the forefront of our thinking as a college and as a result we have endeavoured to create one of the most extensive support packages of any school across the South-West.
We understand that everyone experiences life challenges that can make us vulnerable, which may require additional emotional support. At SJH we believe that positive mental health is everybody’s business and that we all have a role to play.
As a parent/carer outside of the school setting it can be difficult to ascertain where best to seek support for your child. Therefore, we have created a flow chart (see below) to help you identify the routes you can take. Furthermore, we have created three key areas of support. The first is an A-Z glossary of support, within this we have tried to capture the majority of issues our young people face. We have provided information on these issues and collated the best resources we could find to support. You can also use the search function in the top right corner of this page. For example, if the young person is suffering with a bereavement, type this key word in the search bar and you will be taken directly to the support available. Secondly, we have collated information on all the external support available through hyperlinks in the “External support” section. Finally, we have launched a serious on internal clubs to help students, please view this in the “Clubs” section.
We have worked tirelessly to put together a comprehensive package to support parents, teachers and students. You can still contact the pastoral team, or Mental Health Lead Mr Kershaw via email or phone.
