Google Classroom

As part of the College’s support for students during this unprecedented time, we are in the process of setting up online lessons and support using Google Classroom. We are aware that some students may already have a school account, which means that they will need to ‘join a class’ (instructions below). For students who are new to Google Classroom, below are instructions that your son / daughter will need to follow to access their Science classes.

If you have any logging in issues please contact:
                       techsupport@sjhcsc.co.uk

Student that are new to Google Classroom

In the first instance, they will have access to just Science classes, however in time, as the system develops, additional subjects may be requesting that they join.

To access Google classroom, students can either go to http://classroom.google.com, download the Google Classroom app from their device app store or click the link below:

Student Username and Initial password on first login

Google Classroom login details

For example:
• a year 7 student named John Smith would have the username: 19john.smith@sirjohnhunt.co.uk
• a year 9 student named Betty Boo would have the username: 17betty.boo@sirjohnhunt.co.uk

Logging in for the first time

When first logged in, students will need to change their password. We suggest using their college username e.g. 17firstname.surname or writing down their own password for the system.

There will be some circumstances where students may have trouble logging in due to issues with usernames or passwords. In this instance, please can you email techsupport@sjhcsc.co.uk with the year and name of the student that is having issues and we will aim to assist as promptly as possible.

Once logged in Google Classroom, students will need to join their classes. Each student will be a member of a Biology, Chemistry, and Physics class for their year group.

In some cases, students will have already been invited to join a class, which they will need to accept, or alternatively join a class using the following class codes for their year group by clicking the + button in the top right of the screen.

Google Class Codes and Teacher Contact details

Please find below the class codes, the subject teacher and their contact details just in case you have any questions or queries about the work that has been set.

The next screen is the class “Stream” where announcements and communication with the teacher can take place:

Google Classoom

Clicking on the “classwork” tab at the top enables the student to see the work that is currently active for this subject:

google classwork

Lessons will be set weekly, and will contain a retrieval quiz, content to read and make notes on, selected videos and websites to use, and tasks to complete. There will also be a short assessment for each lesson to give students an idea of how they are progressing.

Finally, clicking on the “people” tab will allow the student to email the teacher with any questions they have. Please only use this function for urgent questions, as due to the current situation we may not be able to reply to all questions in a timely manner. Also, the email accounts have been locked to only work within the @sirjohnhunt.co.uk domain so sending and receiving external emails will not work for personal usage.

Google teachers

As we are all aware, this is a challenging time, and the rollout of a new system may have a few issues, however we are working hard to ensure these are dealt with in a timely manner.

Students may access Google Classroom as soon as they are able, however the first lessons will appear from the week beginning Monday 13th April. It would be helpful if students attempt to log in as soon as possible, to identify any issues before the first lessons are set.

If you have any subject specific questions, students will be able to contact the lead member of staff for their subject using the Google Classrooms class page.

If you have any questions, or issues, please contact me on the email below, and I will endeavour to respond as soon as possible.

Thank you for your support

With best wishes
